Throughout American history, the lives of our nation's leaders have been threatened and, tragically, some have been taken. Before the recent apparent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, multiple presidents have faced serious threats.

Past Presidential Assassinations

Abraham Lincoln

The first president to be assassinated was Abraham Lincoln in 1865. He was shot and killed by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C.

James A. Garfield

James A. Garfield was assassinated in 1881 by Charles J. Guiteau. Garfield was shot in the back and died from his injuries two months later.

William McKinley

William McKinley was assassinated in 1901 by Leon Czolgosz. McKinley was shot in the abdomen and died from his injuries eight days later.

Warren G. Harding

Warren G. Harding died in office in 1923, shortly after experiencing a heart attack. There is some speculation that his death may have been an assassination, but there is no definitive evidence to support this claim.
